Wedding tidbits -- the music and the smelling salts

Hot Rize Performs at Steve Martin's Wedding

The bluegrass band Hot Rize performed at actor Steve Martin's wedding on Saturday (July 28) in Los Angeles. The guests, including Tom Hanks and Diane Keaton, initially thought they were attending a dinner party but instead found themselves watching Martin marry journalist Anne Stringfield. Original Hot Rize members Tim O'Brien, Pete Wernick and Nick Forrester, as well as guitarist David Grier, started the ceremony with "Romance Is a Slow Dance." O'Brien then offered an Irish jig, "Sheebeg and Sheemore," for a processional, followed by the band's "Cripple Creek" for the recessional. A banjo player and bluegrass fan, Martin sat in with the band after dinner, playing along with "The Crow" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

Former Pensacolian weds Steve Martin
From staff and wire reports

He is Steve Martin, the famous comedic actor. She is Anne Stringfield, writer and former Pensacolian.

Together, they are husband and wife.

The couple married Saturday at Martin's Los Angeles home, said Alan Nierob, Martin's publicist.

Martin, 61, and Stringfield, 35, dated since about 2002. She has been mistaken for "Sex and the City" actress Kristin Davis, leading to erroneous reports Martin was dating Davis.

The nuptials were a surprise to the roughly 75 guests, including Tom Hanks and Diane Keaton. The attendees thought they were attending a party.

"It was very low key," E! Online reported.

Former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, a friend of Martin's, presided over the ceremony. Lorne Michaels, creator of "Saturday Night Live," was Martin's best man.

Martin delivered his vows sporting an Inspector Clouseau mustache he let grow in for his appearance in the upcoming sequel to 2006's "Pink Panther" remake.

It is the first marriage for Stringfield, a graduate of Pensacola High School.

Her parents, Dr. James and Margo Stringfield, live in Pensacola. Anne Stringfield's father is a pulmonologist, and her mother is a University of West Florida archaeologist.

Stringfield, a Davidson College graduate, has worked at a New York publishing house and for The New Yorker magazine. At The New Yorker, she was a fact-checker and wrote art reviews and reviews of off-Broadway plays.

She also has done some freelance writing for Vogue magazine.

"She's a phenomenal person," said Suzanne Cohan, a guidance counselor at Pensacola High.

Cohan is a friend of Stringfield's parents. Cohan's daughter, Sara, is a friend of Anne Stringfield.

Cohan and her daughter visited Stringfield and Martin last year in New York.

"My daughter and I had gone to New York for a little trip. She got in touch with Anne. He very graciously took us to dinner at a lovely little Italian restaurant," Suzanne Cohan said.

"They seemed very happy together," she said.

Dixon's Brawny Scenes Are Drawing Buyers Beyond Cowboy Country

By Michael Janofsky
Last Updated: June 14, 2007 00:03 EDT

June 14 (Bloomberg) -- Throughout the American West, Maynard Dixon has a profile as long as late-afternoon shadows on the ocher and russet deserts he loved to paint. For more than five decades, until his death in 1946, he captured the look, culture and isolation of a region holding fast against urbanization.

Many of his works depict the solitary and often unforgiving lives of cowboys and Indians, winning him a reputation in some quarters as a ``cowboy painter'' and accounting for his huge popularity among collectors of Western art.

Yet Dixon was more than a one-trick artist, as a new exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art attests. It's the largest show ever of his work, revealing through oils and drawings an evolution of style and an unexpected variety of subject.

An added treat is a selection of paintings that have never been shown in public. Among the 109 works on display, most from Brigham Young University Museum of Art in Provo, Utah, are 34 from private collections, including those of actors Diane Keaton and Steve Martin.

Visiting the show on opening day, Martin expressed a deep admiration for Dixon, saying that one of the works he loaned to the museum, ``Steers to Market,'' hangs at his home ``between an Edward Hopper and a de Kooning.''

``I want to keep him with those great painters,'' Martin said.

Collectors beyond the Western states where Dixon lived and painted -- California, New Mexico and Utah among them -- are appreciating him just as much.

Wider Popularity

``All good Western art is now as likely to be shipped to New York City as Montana and Texas,'' said Mike Overby, a partner in the Coeur d'Alene Art Auction, whose sale in 2005 realized a Dixon record: $1.68 million for ``Story Tellers,'' more than twice the $600,000-$800,000 estimate.

``He is collected all over the United States,'' Overby said. ``Even internationally.''

Overby declined to identify the buyer of ``Story Tellers,'' a 36-by-39-inch oil painted in 1917 that shows eight Indians huddled inside a tent. It now hangs at the museum in Provo.

The Pasadena show (which does not include ``Story Tellers'') is heavy with the scenes Dixon, born in 1875, is best known for: richly colored landscapes of flat-topped mesas, barren deserts and, yes, stern-faced cowboys and Indians.

The show's number and range of works make it easy to see Dixon's stylistic progression, from the post-Impressionism of ``Rain on Talkali Mesa,'' a gauzy, Monet-like desert scene of lavenders and tans painted in 1915 and loaned to the museum by collector W. Donald Head, to the modernism of ``Steers to Market,'' a muscular painting from 1936 of two cowhands driving the herd forward in a spray of dust.

Labor Scenes

On another wall are works that might not be immediately identified with Dixon, including dockworkers from Depression-era San Francisco painted during the time he was married to the photographer Dorothea Lange. They show a dexterity of subject, yet the faces reflect the same disenfranchisement Dixon's Western figures often do.

Donald J. Hagerty, the art historian and Dixon expert who curated the show, described him as ``the Western version of Edward Hopper'' for his use of vibrant colors and light against shadow to convey loneliness and isolation.

``The general public, even those not into art in a profound way, is beginning to pick up on Dixon,'' Hagerty said. ``He is moving farther and farther into the American consciousness.''

``Maynard Dixon: Masterpieces From Brigham Young University and Private Collections'' is at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, 490 E. Union St., Pasadena, California, through Aug. 12. Information: +1-626-568-3665; http://www.pmcaonline.org .

Steve Martin Ties the Knot!
Posted July 28, 2007 10:06:00 PM

Steve Martin has married Anne Stringfield.

The former "SNL" funnyman gets married in a starlight ceremony.

"The Insider" breaks the news that STEVE MARTIN, 61, has gotten married to writer ANNE STRINGFIELD, 35, in a small, private wedding on Saturday!

Sources tell "The Insider" that the nuptials took place at Martin's L.A. home with a ceremony under the stars and an orange moon, and that the bride wore VERA WANG, while the groom reportedly sported ARMANI -- and his "Inspector Clouseau" mustache, as he is scheduled to begin shooting the sequel to 'The Pink Panther' shortly.

Ordained just for the occasion, former Nebraska Senator BOB KERREY officiated the "I do's," while "Saturday Night Live" producer LORNE MICHAELS was Martin's best man. Anne's sister served as maid of honor.

The distinguished guest list included the likes of TOM HANKS and wife RITA WILSON, DIANE KEATON, EUGENE LEVY, CARL REINER, MARTIN MULL, 'Father of the Bride' writer NANCY MEYERS, sleight-of-hand artist and actor RICKY JAY and Martin's agent, ED LIMATO.

After the ceremony, sources tell "The Insider" there was a private catered dinner (with some home recipes) for approximately 75 guests, and the bluegrass band HOT RIZE served up the music. At one point, Martin played "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," a Grammy-winning tune he played banjo on with bluegrass legend EARL SCRUGGS.

This is the second round for Martin, who was previously married to British actress VICTORIA TENNANT from 1986-1994. The pair co-starred in 1984's 'All of Me' and 1991's 'L.A. Story.' This is the first marriage for Stringfield.

Steve Martin, Girlfriend Wed in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Steve Martin married girlfriend Anne Stringfield during a ceremony at his Los Angeles home, his publicist said.

Former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, a friend of Martin's, presided over Saturday's ceremony, Alan Nierob said. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was Martin's best man, he said.

Most of the roughly 75 guests - who included Tom Hanks, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Carl Reiner and Ricky Jay - were not told that he and Stringfield would wed when they were invited to his home for a "party," Nierob said. The ensuing nuptials were a surprise to them, he said.

Martin, 61, was previously married to actress Victoria Tennant, whom he divorced in 1994 after about 8 years together, Nierob said.

It was the first marriage for Stringfield, 35, a writer and former staffer for The New Yorker magazine.

The two had dated for about three years, Nierob said.

Martin delivered his vows sporting an Inspector Clouseau mustache he let grow in for his appearance in the upcoming sequel to 2006's "Pink Panther" remake.

His other movies include "Planes, Trains & Automobiles," "L.A. Story," "Parenthood," and "Father of the Bride."

His novel "Shopgirl" was made into a 2005 film starring himself and Claire Danes.

The wedding was first reported by The Insider, a CBS celebrity news show.

Note: All of the articles I've seen say Anne is 35. My understanding is she's 33, turning 34 in a few months. Steve, of course, has a birthday coming up in two weeks.

Congratuations to the happy couple.

Miss Universe to act opposite Steve

Our Jen's in the pink

JENNIFER Hawkins has been offered a dream job in a Hollywood film. The former Miss Universe has won a sought-after part in the next Pink Panther movie, starring opposite Steve Martin.

Hawkins was originally offered the lead female role, but her demanding modelling and television commitments left her with no choice but to turn down the plum part.

Her management team is now trying to juggle her hectic work schedule so she can take a smaller role in the big-budget film.

"Its incredible,'' Hawkins told The Sunday Telegraph from Ibiza, where she is filming a segment for the Channel Seven travel show, The Great Outdoors.

"I'm so excited and even though I'm not going to be able to accept the main role they've offered, I hope that we can still find time in November and December to take a smaller role.''

The yet-to-be-titled Pink Panther film will go into production on August 20 and run through until December.

To be directed by Harald Zwart, the production will be based in Paris for two months before moving to Boston in the US for the remaining three months.

Steve Martin will reprise his role as Jacques Clouseau, with the bumbling inspector teaming up with a squad of European detectives who are just as incompetent as him.

Pop star Beyonce Knowles played the female lead in the last Pink Panther film.

"I've never had a role in a movie before but I've done a lot of TV presenting and modelling so hopefully that'll help me,'' the former Newcastle Knights cheerleader said.

"I'm just really keen to give it a go.''

Hawkins was Miss Universe in 2004.

We hear that Steve Martin will soon wed girlfriend Anne Stringfield. Martin divorced Victoria Tennant in 1994 after eight years of marriage and went on to date Anne Heche. Stringfield, a one-time New Yorker writer, has recently penned articles for Vogue.

COMMENT: No, I don't know if it's true. But they've been dating now for nearly 5 years. He's pushing 63, and she's approaching 35. Maybe they think it's time.

# Steve Martin is finally going to marry former New Yorker staffer and former Derek Walcott assistant Anne Stringfield! [Rush & Molloy]

Former -- didn't know that. So now apparently she's a writer for Vogue Magazine. She did something about the "Vogue 25", but I haven't found a copy so I don't know the contents. The only reference I have so far is "brief article".

One thing for sure, if they do get married, she'll be the wife and no longer kept so under wraps. No more claiming that things to do with him invade her privacy. Maybe we'll hear more then. It's easier to be delicate and hidden when you're the girlfriend.

Steve Idea Leads to Terrorism Film

Cheadle, Pearce go undercover
By Borys Kit
July 11, 2007

Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce have signed to topline "Traitor," an espionage thriller from Overture Films. Cheadle also will produce along with Mandeville's David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman as well as Jeff Silver.

Jeffrey Nachmanoff will direct from his own script, which is based on an original idea from Steve Martin.

The story centers on a CIA operative working undercover with a terrorist group who becomes a terrorist suspect. Cheadle is the undercover agent, while Pearce is an FBI agent investigating terrorist activities.

Hoberman and Lieberman had been developing the project since early 2002, when Martin approached the duo on the set of "Bringing Down the House," which they were producing. Martin told them to meet him in his trailer because the actor had a thriller he wanted to pitch. Hoberman and Lieberman thought Martin was joking and didn't show up. Martin approached them the next day and asked why they didn't meet him.

When the producers finally heard the idea they seized it, setting it up at Walt Disney Pictures, where their company has a first-look deal. When president of production Nina Jacobson was let go and replaced by Oren Aviv, "Traitor" was among the projects dropped in the regime change.

Still, Hoberman and Lieberman never lost sight of the project, seeing it through incarnations until Cheadle came aboard. Nachmanoff, who made a name for himself writing big-budget fare like "The Day After Tomorrow," came in with a take that impressed the producers.

"He did a lot of research; his first bill to us was for 15 books," Lieberman said. "This is in no way jingoistic."

Said Hoberman: "The movie deals with the subject of terrorism evenhandedly. It's not black and white but gray and religious-based."

The film is set to shoot in early September in Toronto and Morocco.

Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment as well as Arlene Gibbs and Kay Liberman of Cheadle's shingle, Crescendo Prods., will executive produce with Martin.

Overture executive vp production and acquisitions Sean Furst will oversee the project for the studio.

"Traitor" is the sixth project Overture has picked up for distribution in as many months. The company -- which has a goal of releasing eight to 12 movies a year -- recently came aboard to distribute the action thriller "Righteous Kill," starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, and greenlighted "Last Chance Harvey," starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, which begins shooting in October in London.

Mandeville is in postproduction on "The Heaven Project," starring Paul Walker, and will begin shooting "South of the Border" on Monday for Disney. On the television side, Mandeville has Spike's "The Kill Point" premiering July 22 and begins airing its sixth season of the Emmy-winning series "Monk" on Friday on USA Network.

Cheadle, who most recently appeared in "Ocean's Thirteen" and "Reign Over Me," was a producer on Oscar winner "Crash" and the upcoming "Talk To Me." He is repped by UTA, Liberman/Zerman Management and attorney Warren Dern.

Pearce, who can be seen in the upcoming ensemble drama "Winged Creatures," is repped by CAA and Shanahan Management in Australia and attorney David Weber.

The Tahari Comedy Hour
Roasting Steve Martin with Friends In Deed
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

(NEW YORK) Elie and Rory Tahari opened their SoHo home Monday for a cocktail party honoring Steve Martin and benefiting Friends In Deed, a charity that supports those inflicted with life-threatening diseases. One thing: Martin’s accolade was a spoof. “It turns out Steve, of considerable means, had never made a charitable contribution to anything in his life, or picked up a check for that matter,” roasted his friend, and Friends In Deed co-founder, Mike Nichols. “I told him, ‘If you appear, I would see that you get an award. As a result, the Friends In deed Ad Hoc Humanitarian Award, being inaugurated tonight, is being given to given to someone who can draw at least 50 people and whose presence hasn’t already been used up.”

Among the lucky guests on hand for the impromptu comedy act were Terry and Tina Lundgren, Jim Gold, André Balazs, Amanda Ross, and a fashionably late Jeremy Piven. “This, I think, will go in my refrigerator tonight,” the comedian retorted as he was handed his award—a Coke bottle covered in tin foil. “I won an Emmy in 1967 for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and then now I won this,” he added. “Of course this award is more special to me—because it’s more recent.” As Martin was introduced to guests, many of whom included fashion industry insiders he didn’t immediately recognize, one complimented him on his suit. “John Varvatos,” he said, peeling back his suit jacket to show the label. “He’s a CFDA member,” piped Steven Kolb.
